Gloomy Days are Great for Animal Portraits

When people come into my studio for portraits, most of them will be lit by the biggest soft boxes I have. It’s a little challenging to get birds into the studio, however. Fortunately, overcast days turn the sky into the ultimate soft box, providing smooth shadow transitions and lower overall contrast. Action shots can be tougher because there’s less light to support higher shutter speeds, but I don’t like to shoot birds in flight against a white sky anyway, so I take advantage of the naturally soft light to look for portrait opportunities.

The white sky is a double-edged sword, providing soft portrait lighting while also creating a challenging background/backlight. Nikon D7100; Nikon 200-500 f/5.6
